The Inbetweeners Movie review

The boys from E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners are given a longer, more lavish outing as they head to hedonistic Malia looking for sex, booze, sex, and more sex.

The Inbetweeners is not, really, aimed at the likes of me. The TV show was so clever, so well written, though, that it can appeal on a level of sheer quality comedy regardless of the teen hijinks subject matter. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for movie, having all the hallmarks of a production hastily put together to capitalise on the show’s popularity.

There are a fair few funny “bits” but instead of comedy arising from familiar skilfully structured storytelling with subtle setups and devastating pay-offs laced with puerile humour, puerile humour completely takes over. “I tell you what would be really funny here… a cock! And here… and here… Or a poo joke! Or, or, or puke! Or another cock!”

When I was the only one in a packed auditorium laughing at a joke about Greek history it was clear that the film certainly isn’t aimed at the likes of me. It is a shame, though, that it loses the mass-appeal of the series and relies so heavily on cheap gags.
